A Grown Up Heart

About two years ago, my doctor thought he heard a murmur in my heart. I wasn’t surprised, because on a bad day, I can murmur and complain enough to cause Moses himself heartache; however, my doctor wanted me to see a cardiologist. In the past I had a couple of incidences with irregular heartbeats when I was running on the treadmill, and it is imperially important that a heart beat, murmuring and complaining or not.

My one little visit to the heart doctor turned into a series of tests that caused my wallet to tremble. I got to see my heart pumping away on a monitor and I even had my aorta checked. They thought it was enlarged. I fear my bottom has become enlarged, but thankfully nobody’s ever suggested photo imaging of my backside.

Then I took the test where they try to kill you on a treadmill. Don’t ever let the technician in charge of all the wires coming off your chest know that you do any form of regular exercise. In fact, pretend you can’t walk on one leg for this test. If they see even the tiniest hint that you’ve used a treadmill in your lifetime, they defy gravity with the incline and up your speed until you are running faster than the traffic speeding outside the window. They make you stay on until your heart explodes or they decide you’ll live for another six months.

They nearly killed me, but left me with just enough spark to come back two days later and do it all over again. Only this time they decided to inject me with nuclear waste. It was my first time dripping drops of glowing sweat.

The best part is when they decided I was done. Instead of dropping the incline and decreasing the speed, they just pressed stop and I nearly fell over the front of the treadmill and flew out the window. The nurse caught me just short of breaking glass and threw me onto a table to see how my heart would react. I am convinced if you don’t die during one of those tests, you’ll live until you’re ninety.

It was during my last appointment that the doctor was to give me a prognosis and tell me whether I had a happy heart or murmuring heart. My husband was a little nervous and decided to come along, but he only came as far as the parking lot. I think he was scared that they’d put him on a treadmill.

By the time I came out to the car, my husband thought I was about to undergo the knife or worse. After the routine waiting room stint, I spent about forty minutes in the doctor’s office, ten of which we discussed my heart. We talked about Burt’s Bees, make-up, and Maine for the other thirty minutes. I walked out wishing he, his wife, and kids would come over for dinner.

On that cool Spring day, I realized that I was growing up. No longer are my doctors old men in scary white lab coats; they are people with whom I would choose to spend time. It finally dawned on me that my friends are doctors, lawyers, teachers, bankers, police officers, writers, clergy, and business owners. We are running our communities. We are the grown-ups.

My heart is fine. It just beats to an unusual rhythm, but I am still mystified with adulthood. It sneaked up me unawares. I can’t define a time when I transitioned from carefree youth into responsible adult, but it happened. I am all grown-up.

I just hope old age doesn’t sneak up on me as quickly. I don’t want to wake up tomorrow and find myself using a cane, eating all bran cereal, and holding my teeth while I brush them.

Feminism, the bad good word of the 60’s, is symbolized in the burning of bras, mythic or otherwise. Bra burning was considered a protest against the Miss America pageants, just as burning the draft card was a protest against the war in Viet Nam. But all that has changed, reflecting that, is the bra, an enduring symbol of upliftment of the down trodden. From burning of the bra to the wonderbra the Victoria secret’s out. Mammalians of the world unite, stay abreast of the times.

As a photographer who in recent times has had the good fortune of photographing women, the bra becomes an important consideration. Many times after humming and hawing you muster up enough courage to venture into the territory of the undergarment, and sort of let slip, ‘casually’ that a well fitting bra could be as essential as mascara. For a male photographer you would think that having to make this ‘salacious’ comment would be unnecessary. Truth be told the woman and the bra could not be more mismatched. Boudoir London, an up-market lingerie store in Mumbai run by two Punjabi NRI sisters has identified this niche or gaping hole and has success plugging it with bras of every flavour ranging from the matronly to the downright kinky, pink fur, union jack, stars and stripes signifying patriotism albeit to a wrong country, leather and studs and even edible lingerie. Needless to say feminists knee jerk their belans and poll paats protesting the male gaze and use other, “my culture/your culture” jargon, yawn, sigh, ho hum.

And then on Hill Road are Chinese knock offs offering all that and heaven too with voluptuous Rakhee Sawant cut outs, the sales girls, astonishingly, invariably are men generally marwari or Muslim. The misfit continues. The middle class is buying.

And in Bhuleshwar alongside puja material are roadside bra vendors with swishing scarlet and thongie lingerie that fill up like windsocks, traditional women in saris make the purchase with a most interesting ploy, they feel a handkerchief or some very ‘appropriate’ white, or skin coloured bra on the table and ask for the lacey sexy number that’s gyrating in the wind, not letting on by pointing.

There were times where the panty line seen through a pair of tight well fitting trousers was considered so déclassé. It became mandatory that the bra strap or the thing itself should never peek. Lycra was borne and became a household name. Gwen Steffani turned the inside out, the construction of the bra has to be visible through the tee or whatever top you are wearing, it has become like a uniform. The padded bra has become like the stock market, over inflated, needing correction. Thin anorexic chicks walk around with these balloons popping out, the guys have their eyes on stalks and comments like ‘falsies’ were heard in bandra many years before silicone and Pamela Anderson.

Madonna’s metallic cones and Thiery Mugler’s tribute to the tit are all in the hall of fame.

These days in what might be considered daring, the nipple is beginning to dimple the spheres, air-conditioning also gets turned up resultantly while at Fashion week in the event of garment malfunction, nipple tape was prescribed.

The eternal transcendental question of why would a woman wear a black bra under a thin white mul mul kurtha, was it to be considered so sexy? My wife’s sweet, simplistic response was that the white ones were probably in the wash.

And then there is the supreme issue of braless ness, a blatant disregard for convention, slipping into another convention of anti-conventional be bop a loola people and your granny. But just so that the effort and the statement did not go unnoticed, the gait gets galumphing so that miss bouncy is recognized from a kilometer away.

Have you ever marveled at B & P (bra and panty) shops in the most conservative of areas flaunting, satiny, silky, sheer, downright outrageous bras and ever wondered of who would actually buy and wear those things, well they would not have them and change window displays so often if they did not sell, the imagination is doing cartwheels. Concealed under those ubiquitous ‘nighties’ lies an Umrao Jaan.

Ever traveled on a BEST and marveled at a seated middle aged women in thin georgette saris with scooped necklines, the pullow would also slip more occasionally than gravity would otherwise ordain. Nothing more day making than seeing a pair of full breasts. For a country on the one hand that has had bare breasted tribals a mere 50 km from Mumbai 30 years ago and has celebrated sacred sculpture exemplifying fertile, fecund, abundant, topless goddess torsos, and where breasts are popped out in public with impunity to feed infants long past the age, the duality of not showing cleavage continues.

The paan chewing vegetable vendor and kohli woman will delve deep into cleavage land to produce change from a secure wallet stuck in fort knockers.

Women who wear revealing clothes sometimes do it with selectiveness; a shawl or a denim jacket for ‘modesty’ in the street, then at the work place or at the selected destination the peel begins. Most women complain that the male gaze hovers directly on to her breasts, it is a kind of mismatch again, and wanting/not-wanting is the game that is being played. There is a certain kind of look that women don’t like and another that they encourage. It’s the same with touch, every women swears that they know the difference. The act of concealment and revelation is the adult version of hide and seek.

Early on when I was just beginning to photograph women and mentioning bras was unmentionable and personal, it used to amaze me that the ‘models’ all of them regular women, some young and others getting on, would take out from their bags, gingerly, the slinkiest, cleavage revealing garment they could find much to my delight. Women who have it flaunt it.

And beyond the bra is nudity itself. Women who think they are beautiful want to be photographed in the pink, it’s a coming out statement of sorts, it’s a private, personal way of saying, and I am free. The onus is on the photographer to take this trust and become free himself too of the stereotypes. Other women, who can’t or wont yet take the plunge will enjoy revealing cleavage, push up bras, transparent lacey widgets that do all but come off. Straps fall limp off the shoulder and the hooks even get undone seductively.

Then there is the woman who thinks that topless ness is ok but pubic nudity is not, the combinations are endless and fascinating.

These days women talk of the breast hug, a full frontal ness that engages chests leaving no space within. It’s a contact sport and the bruises are pleasure filled.

A young professional woman who seemed very straight laced, used to wearing black, masculine, un flattering suits, a Tam Bram called up once to ask if I would make her look sexy, a bit taken aback at the ‘sexy’ part, above line notwithstanding, I gladly volunteered to make portraits and dithered on the promise of ‘sexiness’. Then I get a call to say that she has finished work early and is ready to come to be photographed and I began stuttering to say it did not work like that and that we would have to decide a look and ‘co-ordinate’ garments, accoutrements etc. All she said was, “ I’m wearing a beautiful, pink, lacey bra”. She came by and beneath all that external un-sexiness was a full creamy body, gorgeous clavicles and fabulous cleavage. She made the most stunning ode to the pink bra pictures that even her mother approved of.

We are definitely a boob nation, whereas Brazil is ass oriented. Bikini destination, Baywatch, Sports Illustrated and Pirelli join the b rated posters in Beer bars, all heralding a bigger brighter future.

A kind of crude bandra schoolboy phrase of the 60’s was small tree, big fruit; I shudder to think how that translates to the more explicit 21 century. Students of mine have done interesting projects shot with spy camera type of scenarios in lifts, of college girls on their way to meet their dates, adjusting their cups in the elevator mirror.

I remember once driving across Rajasthan with a maharashtrian friend who was singing a lavni song about the fox having gone into the sugar cane patch and referring to ‘Khule Aam’, replete with innuendo and double entendre every time we passed rajasthani women with décolletage. Then late at night we pulled into Jaipur and there in a small theatre opposite a dhaba where we were going to eat was Khule Aam showing with dancing lights around the hoarding, the coincidence was hilarious.

The united colour of Benneton ads have shown a black woman breast-feeding a white child and Tocani’s attempts at voyeurism were attacked.

Lascelle Simmon’s specializes in designing the corset his wife Pallavi said that a good corset is one where a woman can kiss her own breasts. Women have fainted with asphyxiation from over tightening their whalebone corsets.

Plea for The Monkees Induction into the Rock Hall

Each year around this time, I always find myself asking the same question: Why are The Monkees not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?! Because really, they should be.

Every year, the Rock Hall Committee nominates and inducts artists and bands into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year, among the inductees were The Stooges, ABBA, Genesis and The Hollies.

People at Rolling Stone magazine say The Monkees shouldn’t be in the Rock Hall because they are not rock music. Wait, aren’t Madonna, The Bee Gees, and this year’s inductee ABBA in the Hall of Fame? Madonna is certainly not “rock.” I’m not saying Madonna should not be in the Rock Hall, because she should, along with other popular music artists. Because pop music is the genre that Madonna’s music mostly falls into.To say that only “rock music” should count is ridiculous. Not everyone who influences music in a positive way is considered “rock.” Not everyone can be The Beatles or The Rolling Stones or Jimi Hendrix.

All the bands and artists inducted in the Rock Hall over the years have been popular in the sense that they had an affect on youth culture. Why should The Monkees be considered “uninductionable” (I don’t even think that is a really word-but you get the point) because they are deemed to be popular music?

The Monkees are just as important to the history of music as any other band or artist because they impacted society. They influenced young people. They had number one singles, hit records and just unbelievable songs like Daydream Believer and Last Train to Clarksville. Yes, they were formed because of the television show, but all four of the members were talented musicians.

Therefore, I am offering this plea for The Monkees to be nominated and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They deserve to be there.

News Ticker: The Rolling Stones, Jack White and Jay-Z, Lil Wayne ...

(All we hear/see is) Telephone Gaga

Jeg har ventet på videoen til Lady Gagas “Telephone.” Forbindelsen mellom telefoner og populærmusikk fascinere mer generelt, samtidig som Lady Gaga har hatt sitt å leve opp til i denne sammenhengen (se her og her). Samtidig, da videoen kom i forrige uke ble jeg nødt til å vente litt med å blogge om den. Ikke at jeg ikke umiddelbart kunne si at det var en fantastisk video, en video som driver musikkvideoproduksjonen framover, og setter ting i spill. Det mener jeg absolutt den gjør. Men jeg behøvde å la den synke inn litt før jeg skrev om den.

Videoen – regissert av Jonas Åkerlund – er ni og et halvt minutt lang, og det er et uttall referanser i den, så mange at den nærmest framstår som sammensatt av populærkulturelle referanser. Samtidig henger den sammen.

Den begynner i et kvinnefengsel, med klare referanser til 70-tallets “women-in-prison” filmer. Her spilles det relativt uhemmet med klisjer, med lesbiske fangevoktere, seksuelle antydninger, semi-pornografiske poseringer, etc. Samtidig, og selv om sjangeren på mange måter er kjent for en gestaltning av det mannlige blikk (the male gaze), virker videoen annerledes. Den stiller spørsmål ved en slik lesning. Og det er her Lady Gagas betydning som mer enn en som refererer populærkultur kommer i spill. Ja, populærkulturen refereres og siteres, men på samme tid problematiseres den. Selv om mange pop-divaer tilsynelatende spiller inn i et heteronormativt skjema, hvor deres iscenesettelse først og fremst repeterer klassiske kjønnsbilder (slik jeg eksempelvis har skrevet om i forhold til Beyoncé tidligere – her), så er ikke dette en nødvendig forståelse selv ikke der stereotypene spilles med. Noen videoer eller iscenesettelser spiller også med stereotypene, og det krever en populærkulturell kompetanse for fortolkningen. I “Telephone” synes dette å være på spill.

Referansene til filmkulturen er overveldende, mest åpenbart kan hende til Quentin Tarantino (ikke minst Kill Bill, 2003-04, men også Pulp Fiction, 1994), men også Thelma & Louise (Ridley Scott, 1991) er nærliggende i videoens narrativ. Sammen med Tarantion er vel Madonna den som tydeligst refereres, filmatisk fra Desperately Seeking Susan (Susan Seidelman, 1985), men også – selvsagt – hennes musikk (ikke minst fra 80-tallet – og her er det fristende, igjen, å referere til åpningen av Tarantinos Reservoir Dogs, 1992). I tillegg ses dansetrinn som siterer Michael Jackson.

En annen interessant dimensjon er samspillet mellom Lady Gaga og Beyoncé. Jeg har tidligere skrevet om hvordan Beyoncé nærmest blir reaksjonær i sin kjønnspolitikk (“Single Ladies” er kroneksemplet). I videoen til “Videophone” finnes også slike dimensjoner, men den er åpnere. Her, i “Telephone” er det hele annerledes. Kanskje er det “Sasha Fierce” som er på spill, Beyoncés alter ego fra hennes siste plate. Sikkert er det at hun på mange måter spiller femme til Lady Gagas mer butchy performance.

Jonas Åkerlund regisserte også videoen til “Paparazzi” og selv om den videoen er annerledes enn “Telephone” er de samtidig beslektet. Kortfilmer mer enn musikkvideoer, og så absolutt bearbeidelser av selve sjangeren.

Begge videoen er til dels “eksplisitte” i sitt innhold (såvidt jeg kan se har YouTube fra og med i dag lagt inn en 18-års sperre for å komme til videoen, noe som som oftest er et tegn på seksuelt eksplisitte scener – selv om det også noen ganger bare er absurd). Men at popmusikken spiller på sex og utforsker det seksuelle er ikke noe nytt. Men på samme måten som man i “Telephone” kan se utfordringer av det mannlige blikk, der selv Beyoncé i korte denimshorts først og fremst synes å vise seg fram for Gaga heller enn for noe heteronormativt mannlig blikk, på samme måten kan også det seksuelt eksplisitte utfordre den samtidige seksualmoral, både av det heteronormative slaget og den som synes å se undertrykkelse ved enhver antydning av kvinnens seksualitet. Lady Gaga spiller definitivt på sex, og hun viser hud – og sex – som en integrert del av sine videoer, men man kan likevel finne en kritisk brodd i dette. Ved 1:10 i “Telephone”-videoen faller replikken “I told you she didn’t have a dick,” en tydelig referanse til ryktene (om man kan kalle det det) om at Lady Gaga er hermafroditt, rykter som har vært såvidt påtrengende at de den siste tiden også er del av Gagas egen praksis. Ikke bare her i videoen, men også i forhold til intervju i mars-nummeret av Q.

På coveret av Q poserer Lady Gaga med bar overkropp der brystene skjules av hendene hennes, i uortodokse hansker. Og hun har en mer enn tydelig bul i buskene. Intervjuet inne i bladet fokuserer igjen på denne tilsynelatende dobbeltheten, og på det for Gaga absurde i ryktene om at hun skulle være mann. Samtidig ser jeg også i dette bildet en filmreferanse, men denne gangen til Tim Burtons Edward Scissorhands (1990). Muligens er det noe kastrerende over Lady Gagas hender. Samtidig, om vi husker Johnny Depp i rollen som Edward er det også noe annet på spill her. En annerledeshet som forsøker å manøvrere innenfor normativiteten.

Oppmerksomheten rundt Lady Gagas påkledning har vært enorm, og hun vant prisen som både best og verst kledd (samtidig) på årets NME Awards. Muligens sier dette noe om hvor konvensjonell popbransjen er, og samtidig også noe om hva som er på spill med Lady Gaga. Vi har ikke hørt det siste fra henne – noe videoens slutt vel også sier tydelig.

The ad campaign, shot by Steven Klein, features multiple stills of Madonna seductively posing behind dark shades. “She’s the way people see her—a real star, admired, desired and spied,” Stefano Gabbana told WWD. While this is the first co-branded project for Dolce & Gabbana, it’s not their first time working with Madonna. Along with designing some of her tour costumes over the years, the duo also tapped the pop icon to star in their Spring 2010 ad campaign. MDG is also one of many fashion projects Madge has lined up. Last week she announced her partnership with Iconix Brand Group where she’ll develop a junior’s clothing line exclusively for Macy’s.

Worst of the Week: Lindsay Lohan

Okay, you can all let out a sigh of relief! We decided to keep it light heading into spring break, so unless you’re Lindsay Lohan (or apparently one of her lawyers), you can relax knowing that you can enjoy your week on the beach or by the pool … or just watching the snow melt without the Ad Mavericks getting on your case!

If you’ve been too busy analyzing the college basketball world in preparation of your office pool, you may have missed Lindsay Lohan’s desperate attempt to thrust herself back into the media spotlight. ”Lindsay who?” you ask. We’re talking about the starlet from such cinematic masterpieces as “Mean Girls“, “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen” and “Freaky Friday“. THAT Lindsay.

Here’s the story: Apparently, Lohan was so taken aback by the resemblance of her in a recent E*Trade tv commercial that she felt the stock trading company was using her likeness. Here’s the real kicker: to back up the claim, Lohan’s lawyer argued that Lohan has single name recognition of her first name, “Lindsay” similar to the likes of Oprah, LeBron, Madonna, Tiger and Kobe. Here’s the spot:

Yep, Lohan thinks that’s worth a cool hundred million. Successful with her lawsuit, the spot would likely be the most viewed of any of the works that feature (or don’t feature) her.

As for E*Trade, they are basking in the fact that their investment in a Super Bowl spot is now getting a second wind. Almost 4 million views of the ad on YouTube alone? That’s crazy – not just because of the number of viewers, but also because when you run an ad on t.v. you’re buying ratings – hoping people are paying attention and not skipping over your spots with their DVR. When 4 million people view your spot on YouTube, it means 4 million people chose to watch it – meaning they were likely more attentive and engaged.

So, the big question is, will Lohan win? We hope for not. But when you put some high paid lawyers in a room together, crazy things can happen. Right Brett? (Hope our cage-fighting lawyer friend doesn’t take offense to this likeness and soak us for a million!)

Madonna to launch fashion range

Pop diva Madonna has announced to launch a range of clothes.

The 51-year-old singer is creating the range, named MG Icon, in a joint venture with her manager Guy Oseary and Iconix – the company behind designer lines Badgley Mischka and Candie’s, reports contactmusic.com.

“Joining forces with Iconix to bring my fashion ideas to the consumers is very exciting for me,” said Madonna in a statement.

“I look forward to working closely with Neil Cole of Iconix and his team to create and translate my vision and ideas for MG Icon,” she added.

Neil Cole said: “Madonna is a legend in the world of music, fashion and entertainment and now with her deep involvement in MG Icon, we will be able to leverage her vision into consumer products globally.”

“Our strategy is to introduce brands formed through the joint venture in multiple countries and organically expand worldwide,” he added.

The brand’s first project will be named after Madonna’s hit “Material girl” and will be a junior range with items costing between $12 and $40. Clothes will be on sale at Macy’s department stores from August.

Having a lot of fun Penelope and Javier on the party organized by Madonna and Demi Moore in Los Angeles. According to journal People Penelope, and her friends danced ’salsa’, staged a funny scene with a false mustache and appeared alongside Javier neck wearing a feather boa. A crazy night!

A party attended by over 300 people who danced nonstop,tasted Indian food and drank the cocktail created by Demi Moore for the occasion: Vita Coco Caipirinha. Demi Moore, which marched down the red carpet alone, met her husband Ashton Kutcher who were very happy all evening that lasted until the wee hours of the morning.

Madonna looks about ready to announce an Australian tour.

A touring company insider has alerted Undercover to the soon-to-be announced Madonna ‘The Celebration Tour’ for July.

This will be the first time Madonna has been to Australian since 1993 and it will be her second ever Australian tour.

In total, 10 shows are planned with three shows for Sydney and Melbourne, two for Brisbane and one each for Adelaide and Perth penciled in.

The ticket price is said to be the highest price ever for a pop concert ticket in Australia with the cheap seats expected to go for $249, next level at $499, Gold at $999 and then an Ultimate ticket at $2000.

For $1000 more, Ultimate ticket holders can also upgrade to the Penultimate ticket for $3000 which will include a meet and greet, photo op and personally signed program from the tour.

The show is expected to be marketed as “a gift to Australia” for the years of touring cold shoulders.

The Australian shows will be indoor arena shows as opposed to the outdoor stadium shows she did in other parts of the world last year, hence the expensive ticket price.

The Melbourne show at Rod Laver Arena is also expected to be filmed for a live DVD.

Madonna’s drummer Brian Frasier-Moore has let the cat out of the bag, confirming (in the video interview below) that the Queen of Pop will hit the road for a new tour early in the new year.

But it’s an anonymous email that arrived in our inbox today claiming to be from a “touring industry insider”, that’s most peaked our interest.

In it they make a series of claims, including that Madonna will announce a ten date tour of Australia later this month.

They also suggest that;

* “The Celebration Tour” will be an intimate arena tour, visiting Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

* The tour will be marketed as a special “gift” for her Australian fans, who’ve waited almost 17 years to see her.

* 250 tickets will be given away to charity at each show.

* Ticket prices will be the highest ever seen in Australia (starting at $249).

* The tour will continue to overseas destinations, but on a larger scale (they name London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Berlin).

* One of the Melbourne dates will be filmed for a future DVD release.

We cannot confirm that any of the details contained in the email are true, and we’re not suggesting they are, but it certainly makes for interesting and exciting reading, particularly for local fans of the Material Girl, who’ve waited almost 17 long years to see her back on Australian shores. Could it be that in 2010, their wish finally come true?

I’ve had a couple of recent revelations that I would like to share.

The other day it was pointed out to me that the fruit that I believed to be a pomegramate for the twenty-four years of my existence, is actually called a pomegranate. How this passed me by for almost a quarter of a century I do not know, however until yesterday a good (and slightly older) friend of mine thought Sherlock Holmes was a historically accurate figure, which makes me feel way better. Another thing that I have discovered is that contrary to popular belief, Madonna did not invent the vogue, Malcolm McLaren did it first.

In fact neither Madonna nor Malcolm can be credited for the actual invention of the Vogue, which was born from the U.S inner city gay club scene in the late 1980s. However in 1989 Mclaren, whose previous accomplishments included shacking up with Vivienne Westwood to provide the world with Punk, released “Deep in Vogue,” a song that reached no.1 on the Billboard Dance Chart and whose masterfully crafted, highly stylized and understated video introduced the underground Voguing culture to the mainstream.

Madonna’s “Vogue,” which was released in, and reached no.1 A YEAR LATER, features an uncannily similar montage of hand gestures, body poses and movements to “Deep in Vogue.” Beat, baseline and general groove; it’s all a rip off. Whereas McLaren provides an uncomplicated insight into underground culture by maintaining and expressing the raw identity of the Vogue, Madonna’s version by comparison stands as the self indulgent romp of a manufactured pop icon.

Contrary to what history has evolved to suggest, the triangle titted Queen of pop should neither be credited for creating, nor masterminding the mainstream emergence of the Vogue. Pop star she may be, but revolutionary, trend setting legend she is not. Well done Malcolm.

It appears that I am not the only one who Madonna has agitated with her glory stealing. On his album Midtown 120 Blues (voted no.1 dance album of 2009 by Resident Advisor) DJ Sprinkles reveals his own distain for Madonna’s unhand Voguing tactics. In his aptly titled track “Ball’r (Madonna Free Zone,)” Sprinkles says:

“When Madonna came out with her hit “Vogue” you knew it was over. She had taken a very specifically queer, transgendered, Latino and African-American phenomenon and totally erased that context with her lyrics, “It makes no difference if you’re black or white, if you’re a boy or girl.” MAdonna was taking in tons of money, while the Queen who actually taught her how to vogue sat before me in the club, strung out, depressed and broke. So if anybody requested “Vogue,” or any other Madonna track, I told them, “No, this is a Madonna free zone! And as long as I’m DJ-ing you will not e allowed to vogue to the decontextualized, reified, corportlized, re-genderized, pop reflection of this dancefloor’s reality!”

Pop diva Madonna is allegedly dating ex-boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.

The “Celebration” singer is believed to have reunited with Brazilian model Jesus Luz this week following a recent split.

But she is apparently still seeing her former baseball star lover who is nicknamed A-Rod, and visited him in Miami last week, femalefirst.co.uk reported

“Madonna spent two nights with him in his beach house in Miami last week and Jesus had no idea,” said a source.

“She just didn’t tell him, and her staff were told not to tell him. She claims she has an intellectual connection with A-Rod.”

Madonna was rumoured to be dating Alex after she split from now ex-husband Guy Ritchie at the end of 2008.

The 51-year-old pop superstar is also said to have developed a deep connection with Carlos Leon, the father of her 13-year-old daughter Lourdes.

“When Madonna split from Guy Ritchie, Carlos was there for her,” a source revealed.

“They spent a lot of time together and old emotions came back. But Carlos has a lovely girlfriend who Lourdes doesn’t like, which has made life difficult. There will always be a big connection between Madonna and Carlos.”

Madonna ‘rents English manor in the Hamptons for summer’

Madonna has rented a house on Lily Pond Lane in East Hampton to beat the heat this summer, sources say.

The Queen of Pop has reportedly purchased Coxwould, the English-flavored, six-bedroom house from real-estate developer Lowell Shulman.

The 2-acre property was listed for 425,000 dollars for the season, reports the New York Post.

Now Madonna will be a neighbor of Jerry Della Femina and Martha Stewart.

Meanwhile, she is set to fly to Rio, Brazil to see the Samba Parade during Carnival on February 14.

“That’s right, you were a good friend of Linda Stein’s,” The New York Daily News columnist Joanna Molloy said greeting me during the midday recess in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday. “Tell me about her?”

My most resounding memory of Linda Stein is an all-nighter with her beginning at the Ritz hotel in Paris in the early 1990s. My most immediate memory is the last time I saw her on the upper East Side a few days before she was murdered in late October 2007 in her one-bedroom Fifth Avenue apartment, allegedly assaulted repeatedly by her assistant Natavia Lowery, who is on trial now charged with her murder. I considered where to go with memory. What to say about Linda Stein?

Courts and trials aren’ t my usual beat, are they? When I saw two interesting looking men walking in our direction and, looking down, noticed the silver bracelets on the shorter man’s wrists, I thought of the handiwork of a young, popular with the fashion set jewelry designer Philip Crangi, or Verdura, only to snap out of my silly association and focus. Time and place. The man was handcuffed and being led by a detective. I told Joanna where my mind had just gone. She laughed.

Linda Stein was a well-known real estate broker whose clients famously included Madonna, Sting, Edgar Bronfman, Jr. and Angelina Jolie. She had been a Bronx-born schoolteacher who, matched by one of her student’s, met and married Seymour Stein, a founder of Sire Records and a colleague of the late Ahmet Ertegun. In the course of her career, or careers as we heard the assistant district attorney Joan Iluzzi-Orbon say in her opening statement on this first official day of Linda’s murder trial, she had “reinvented herself,” over and over. She had managed musical groups, including the Ramones. She had “reinvented” and gone into selling real estate when Edward Lee Cave, the real estate legend and former Sotheby’s bigwig, had met Linda during her days as a collector of art and antiques. Much later, she had become “our New York Auntie Mame,” the young social figure and fashion editor Lauren Santo Domigo has described her, when her daughter Mandy went to the Kent School in Connecticut and, among her suite mates, was Lauren, as well as the gallerist Amy Greenspon. On breaks from Kent, as Mandy’s guests, they frequently assembled at Linda’s Central Park West apartment.

Linda was a true New Yorker, someone who lived the Manhattan dream you see in Preston Sturges movies recast in a Warhol film. In the mid-1980s, when people drew great distinctions between “uptown” and “downtown” in New York, she was the queen, the elegant hybrid of both worlds plus a lot of Paris tossed into her crazy salad life. She spoke French fluently and included among her nearest and dearest not just Elton John and Madonna but also the French interior designer Jacques Grange and decorator Mica Ertegun, wife of the late Ahmet.

At the time of her death, she was working for Douglas Elliman’s real estate shop, one of their highest earners. Douglas Elliman had provided, through an employment agency, Natavia Lowery, this very pretty young woman, whose checkered employment history they failed, alas, to check. Now Natavia is accused of Linda’s brutal murder–bashing her head in six times with a yoga stick–as well as identity theft and stealing $30,000 from Linda. A lawyer for Natavia conceded that his client was guilty of theft, but not of murder. Although she had confessed, it was a false confession, the defense attorney is claiming on his client’s behalf because, while Linda might have spent her life “reinventing,” Natavia had spent her life “telling people what they wanted to hear,” so her confession to the authorities was false, fatally false. Despite the objections of the prosecutor, the defense lawyer continues to speculate overtly and covertly about who might have committed the murder, suggesting it might even have been one of her two daughters.

Despite the grueling playing of Mandy’s 911 calls to try and get help for her mother who lay “cold and hard,” Linda and her life is now on trial, her “feisty” nature, her battle with breast cancer, the privileges of the Fifth Avenue apartment itself, her perhaps over-use of medically-intended marijuana, her inability to use her arm fully to blow dry her hair or button a sweater as a result of the aggressive surgery to treat her breast cancer, and more.

Mandy, who found her mother in a pool of blood that cold October night, spent the day on the witness stand describing the scene of the crime, Linda’s one-bedroom Fifth Avenue apartment, how it worked, its services, elevator men and deliveries, and identifying the body we saw in photographs face down dressed for a walk in the park. How her mother’s last words before she went to work that day, editing footage of “Burning Down the House,” a film this documentarian made about the club CBGB, which she had to of course describe for the uninitiated, was to wear Linda’s scarf, it was cold outside. But Mandy didn’t want to take it because “it was too good” a scarf. Having once been a client of the couture, and Azzedine Alaia, Linda’s wardrobe in her later years was decidely Loro Piano chic, not cheap, and casual.

On the night I remember most in Paris all those years ago, it was mid-July. I was there to report on the couture shows. Linda Stein was traveling with her friend, and client, Sylvester Stallone, who had a fierce crush on Naomi Campbell, in Paris modeling in the shows. After a dinner given by Gianni Versace–the Milanese-based designer had covered the pool at the Ritz for his first Paris couture show, a big deal for Gianni, and for Paris–Linda Stein organized for Naomi and Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington, the three graces of the era, to have a nightcap in one of the grand suites of the Ritz with Stallone and after a ton of laughs we all went off to a disco and there is a famous Roxanne Lowit photograph of Naomi, Linda and Christy walking down the Champ d Elysee at dawn.

Like an unhappy wedding, the courtroom is seated with Linda’s family and friends on one side and Natavia’s on the other. One thing is already evident. Two families have been forever heartbroken. Linda’s daughters, Mandy Stein and Samantha Wells, have their mother and tender memories to a violent crime and horrific trial.

Natavia Lowery, facing up to life in prison, idles in Riker’s Island except for the daily commute to court, where, at Riker’s, she gave birth to a daughter whom she now rarely sees.

The trial is expected to continue for at least six weeks.

It’s a little bass-heavy, as our friends over at HardCandyMusic describe it, but it’s actually better than most of the tracks on the album – and then Madonna’s vocals kick in. This is the second part of our point-counterpoint discussion. The topic of today’s Point-Counter Point: Is Jersey Shore or The Olive Garden a more unfair stereotype of Italian-American culture?

I’d like to begin this reply by using the most indefatigable evidence in the universe: math. According the Olive Garden the Never Ending Pasta Bowl combinations are nearly endless. And according to leading commercials the math required to figure out the total number of combinations would require at least a team of astrophysicists working for weeks to accurately calculate. So here we go.

There are a total of seven possible pastas: Spaghetti, Whole Wheat Linguine, Linguine, Fettuccine, Penne, Angel Hair, and Orecchiette. There are also a total of six possible sauces Creamy Parmesan Florentine, Roasted Portobello Pomodoro, Alfredo, Meat Sauce, Five Cheese Marinara, and Marinara. So let’s plug that into the old math machine, and I am sure the number will be high in the millions…

For those of you unfamiliar with the number forty-two, let me tell you that it is the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. Now are you going to tell me that such a clearly holy number, from the holiest of pasta deals, from, clearly, the holiest of Italian-American themed restaurant chains is offensive to a certain ethnic group from a certain boot shaped nation? Pfffft, whatever.

But if you must insist on forcing me to defend the most hallowed of fake stucco halls, I shall oblige you only to ensure that the OG’s reputation remains untarnished. The simple fact is that the Olive Garden gives so much to world and asks for almost nothing in return. Reasonably priced pasta dishes? Check. Friendly service? Of course. Endless salad and breadsticks?! My cup runneth over.

Of course at the Olive Garden, it’s not really about the food. It’s about the experience. It’s about being transplanted to the rolling hills of Tuscany, flowing fields of wheat golden in the morning sun, and Giovanni, the young, dark, sculpted gardener gently nibbling at your toes – excuse me, I was lost in the moment there for a second…and isn’t that exactly the point? To be transplanted to a place with decadent food, bold wines, and beautiful people, if only for an hour, and escape the gross, simplistic, and discourteous world we live in on this side of the Atlantic. We need this escape and we deserve it, and I am proud that a franchise that claims to represent my ethnic homeland is the one to give it.

And what of Jersey Shore? Is it indeed the case that these seven examples of hedonistic hair gel and boob jobs are the best examples of Italian-Americans that we as a society can present? Are these the future leaders of this country? JWoww the next Madonna? The Situation the next Martin Scorsese? Pauly D the next Samuel Alito?! I certainly hope not. Yet if this is the highest representation we have found (and we know only the loftiest manifestations of our culture make it onto the TV), I fear for us. Oh yeah, you sit around claim to watch it “ironically.” Claim that you watch it as an example of how not to act, an example of the most disgusting human behavior you have ever seen. How is that entertainment?! That is simply not an explanation for watching such a morally corrupt program. You might be watching Jersey Shore to make yourself feel better… “Hey, I’ve only slept with four girls in a hot tube- Six?! That Pauly D just doesn’t know where to draw the line.” Or maybe it’s a secret perverse desire that drives addiction… “Wow, JWoww’s boobs are so fake-gross, oh god please let me touch them.” Either way, the fact that you would even watch this show, let alone support it, is demonstrating some serious emotional dysfunction.

So what’s the alternative? Yes, it’s easy to mock the heartfelt slogan, When you’re here, you’re family. But maybe we need something really sincere, just maybe, in these tough times, we need a place to open its doors and say, Hey you look hungry-how about 3000 calories of Alfredo sauce to fix you right up?

The Olive Garden is that place.

Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet tour, which ran from August 2008 to September 2009, earned its provocative headliner a cool $408 million, making it the second most successful tour in history, and, from March 29, fans will be have the opportunity to channel even more money into her pockets with the much anticipated release of the tour DVD. Filmed over a four-day residency at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, where Madonna played to over 256,000 fans, the concert film naturally includes a “historic” performance of ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina’, as well as ‘Like A Prayer’, ‘Ray Of Light’, ‘Hung Up’ and ‘Four Minutes’.

Although the tracklists for the DVD/Blu-Ray and CD have not yet been confirmed, much of the footage has previously been aired worldwide on Sky One and by TV channel Epix. Additionally, an uncut version was shown exclusively in four South and Central American countries in September 2009. The DVD/Blu-Ray includes 30 minutes of additional exclusive behind-the-scenes footage filmed throughout the tour.

So it’s Christmas and I have decided to take some time out from social media for the week. Coupled with this decision I have managed to leave my Blackberry at home whilst we are visiting family for the week. Now if people know me well, they will realise that I am addicted to being connected. I am on Twitter and Facebook constantly and my Blackberry is the tool of choice to interface with these tools (although my laptop is a close second).

So why did I choose to cut my right arm off, so to speak? Well I have noticed that social media is taking over my interaction with people in real life. I’m twittering when I should be playing Duplo with my daughter. I’m checking Facebook when I should be having a conversation with my wife. There’s definitely a reason why they’re nicknamed “Crackberry” – they are addictive. Apparently Barack Obama is addicted -there are photos of his wife telling him off for using it while on the touchline watching his daughters play soccer.

A connected life is not necessarily a richer life. There are anecdotes of Washington aides checking their Blackberry’s before they have a shower in the morning. Madonna keeps hers under her pillow at night, which is apparently one of the contributing factors in her divorce. Another impact is that with so much information to choose from, we are selecting that which complements our worldview rather than being exposed to a large cross section of opinion with which to temper our outlook on the world.

For me, there’s also the realisation that I need, as I believe everyone does, to take time out from the busyness of life to focus on what is really important. My family will receive more of me, and converse more with me. I think I’ll even try and tackle a few of the many books on my tall reading pile. In Mark 2 we see that Jesus gets up early in the morning and separates himself from the hustle and bustle of life to seek His Father and listen to what he had to say. In another example of this we see Jesus after being baptised goes into the desert from an extended period of time to pray and seek God. Lastly Jesus regularly withdraws from the world to be with his group of disciples.

So lastly, I feel that we need to find the time to disconnect from the world and seek His purpose for what we are trying to achieve. The connections are just tools for us to use to further His will. If they start to take over, and you feel naked when they’re not there, then if you’re a follower of Christ, I think it’s time that you cut the cord. Man should only be dependant on Jesus. Anything else is just not gonna be the same.

So my challenge to anyone, not just Christians, is to go cold turkey and take time out from your cell phone and social networking. This is my last blog for a week. See you on the other side!

the perils of using the seek button while driving through the middle of nowhere

I was recently on an 11 hour road trip through what we’ll call the buckle of the bible belt. My truck comes equipped with a state of the art AM/FM radio – but not much else – so I quickly became well acquainted with the “seek” button. There comes a point as one passes through the southeastern edge of America’s “heartland” (MissiGeorgiaBama) that the frequencies are suddenly abandoned. That’s right, nothing but soft white noise for miles and miles. I was in such a drive-weary haze by the time I realized that I hadn’t heard Lady GaGa in, like, atleast 20 minutes that it never occurred to me that my trusty-dusty seek button might not do me as much good as it had in the previous 6 hours. I needed music, preferably the tacky top 40 kind. You can’t accidentally fall asleep at the wheel to Lady GaGa singing about her poker face.

On a side note, the love songs that the pop stations play (Does Jeremih’s “Birthday Sex” even count as a love song?) make me wretch uncontrollably if I’m not breathing through my nose.

Onward with our story! I pressed “seek”, and the button sought. And sought. And sought. It finally came to rest on the low end of the spectrum, 91.something. There was a pause before any sound came from my speakers. In this brief moment I had time to contemplate what I was about to hear. As a general rule, stations that lie between 88.1 and about 93.1 FM tend to be either NPR (I could only hope) or fire and brimstone. Y’all know what I’m talking about. In more metropolitan areas I see billboards featuring bright, smiling, conservatively dressed anglo-saxon couples beaming mindlessly at a wooden cross advertising HIS FM 98.5 or HALO 104.3 – All Praise and Worship, All the Time! Not in BFE, kids. Out there in the middle of nowhere they don’t play bouncy Jesus-centric feel good pop songs. They play audio of the Reverend Ronny Bob Jones addressing his congregation from his pulpit at the Church of Sweet Smokin’ Jesus, Did He Just Say That?!

What I heard was not radio. It was noise pollution of the most bizarre kind. The pastor, in his most ridiculous southern Baptist the-end-uh-days-are-a-comin’ voice declared over and over again that yoga, pilates, and zen meditation are all, in fact, TOOLS OF SATAN!

Really? Pilates is a tool of Satan? That’s really unfortunate, because I love pilates. It strengthens my core. I guess by extension then I must also love Satan. Jesus never strengthened my core. I’ve never prayed to Our Heavenly Father and been miraculously blessed with a spectacular tummy.

So if pilates is a tool of Satan, does that mean that Satan in responsible for Madonna’s scary superbitch body? Maybe it is evil.

Yes, I’m quoting a line from a Madonna song. I’ve been listening to 2008’s Hard Candy on my iPod during my workouts at the gym. The music, especially Beat Goes On, inspires me to move faster and push a little harder. The quoted lyrics have also grabbed my attention as I review this soon-to-be-ending year and decade, and look forward to 2010.

As the new year approaches I am envisioning myself in some new, unexplored geographical locations, growing my business as I speak in bigger venues, reaching more people through my J.O.B., forming new and powerful professional and personal alliances (that would mean I’ve got a new love, baby), and happily sharing more of myself with the world as I shine brighter and brighter.

I am ready. I am willing. I am open.

Madonna - Rescue Me (The Dub Remixes)

After the positive response to the first “Rescue Me” post, I decided to create a second one with the rare dub versions, three of which are only available on this US promotional 12″ single. They are all excellent in my opinion, and as with all dub versions, quite refreshing when you’ve listened to the main club mixes a million times.

This 12″ vinyl double pack came in a white sleeve with a sticker, pictured above.

Definition of Dub In Pop/Dance Music

Dub is genre of music that involves revisions of existing songs. The dub sound consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings and is achieved by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasizing the drum and bass parts or, in other words, ‘riddim‘, adding extensive echo and reverb effects, and dubbing occasional snippets of lyrics or instruments from the original version.

The “Rescue Me” Dub Versions

All dub versions were created by Shep Pettibone. The two dubs named after their vocal counterparts are alternative versions of them. The Demanding Dub contains elements mostly from the S.O.S. Mix, and the Disaster Dub could be considered a second dub of the Houseboat Vocal.

My favorite is probably the Lifeboat Dub. This one features a very acid-house reminiscent synth sound not present on any of the other mixes (it can be heard at 1:05 and is repeated throughout the track).

The Demanding Dub is the only one otherwise available. It was released on CD and 12″ vinyl in Germany and Australia.

Toda quarta-feira à noite Ticiane Pinheiro tem um encontro marcado com seus seguidores no Twitter. A apresentadora da Record, religiosamente, narra pela rede de relacionamento o que está rolando no programa do marido, Roberto Justus, 1 Contra 100, do concorrente SBT.

“Adorei esse participante”, relata Ticiane, entre outras coisas. Ela, entretanto, não faz um comentário sobre Bela, a Feia e Poder Paralelo, as atrações que na mesma hora estão no ar na Record.

Alguém já viu alguém da Globo falando de outra emissora? Inovadora, Ticiane está dando audiência ao marido.

Ninguém quer “passar recibo” sobre a atitude de Tici. Mas um diretor lembra que o “contrato dela com a Record acaba em 2010″, sem falar mais nada. Será que essa foi a forma encontrada por Ticiane para mandar seu currículo ao SBT? Tão inovadora.

Adriana Bombom está com a língua afiada em ‘A Fazenda 2’. O alvo foi a empresária Luma de Oliveira, que ocupou o posto de rainha da bateria da Portela no lugar da dançarina este ano. Chateada com a substituição, Adriana soltou o verbo ontem durante conversa com Maurício Manieri e Igor Cotrim. “Ela nem está mais lá. Fez todo o ‘bafão’ só pra aparecer”, disse ela, referindo-se a desistência de Luma para desfilar no Carnaval de 2010.

As declarações, no entanto, não abalaram Luma de Oliveira. Segundo o irmão da empresária, ela sequer será informada sobre o assunto. “A Luma não precisa disso para aparecer. Ela não quer trabalhar, não quer fazer novela por vontade própria, porque não precisa”, alfineta.

Adriana não esconde o ressentimento com a escola azul e branca. “ Foi uma falta de consideração comigo. Eu já estava toda sarada, tinha gravado a vinheta. Foram quatro anos lá”, desabafou. Depois do troca-troca, a atriz foi sambar no Carnaval paulista. Atualmente é Rainha da bateria da Tom Maior.

Depois do Carnaval o assunto foi sobre sexo. Em conversa com Igor e Maurício, Leozinho fala sobre a abstinência sexual. “O cara que fica aqui um mês fica doido”, disparou. Cotrim não entendeu e o MC explicou. “Um mês sem bater na cara da sapa”, disse, arrancando risadas da dupla. “Imagino a cara da sapa”, completou Manieri e depois fez até música: “Dá uma batidinha na cara da sapa. Coacha, coacha gostoso”.

O clima, no entanto, ficou tenso na fazenda depois da formação do primeiro ‘Tá na Roça’. Os fazendeiros Sheila Mello, Matheus Rocha e Ana Paula Oliveira estão na berlinda e um deles será eliminado, ao vivo, no domingo. Após ser indicada pelo grupo, a bandeirinha se afastou dos demais colegas.

Todos os grandes números da música pop em 2009 ficaram na bolsa de Lady Gaga. This week the train stops at Madonna’s unforgettable 1986 album “True Blue”, dedicated to her then husband Sean Penn this album was deemed more girly and fun than her predecessors Madonna and Like a Virgin. Spawning 5 hit singles this album is said to be the one that secured her place as a superstar in the 80s. I disagree I feel all of her albums up to this point helped her career as they all had several major hits but this one I suppose is different as she took it in a different direction sound wise.

Brenda Fassie – Love Action

Temat på det här inlägget är tämligen enkelt. Det handlar om att jag tar upp tre låtar som är från tiden då Madonna ännu inte var den superstjärna hon sen blev. Istället fanns det mängder av liknande artister som alla siktade mot stjärnorna men av en eller annan anledning inte riktigt nådde ända fram i slutändan. Därmed sagt så menar jag inte att de var dåliga, tvärtom, flera av dem får i mina ögon bra mycket högre betyg än Madonna om man utgår från deras samtida produktioner. De här tre låtarna är sådana exempel på när några av dessa artister utklassar Madonna på hennes hemmaplan.

Brenda Fassie som får öppna det hela finns tyvärr inte kvar i livet, hon dog under oklara omständigheter 2004. Wikipedia har flera olika uppslag kring hur hon dog men eftersom inget av dem är möjliga att bekräfta så avstår jag från att ge mig in i några spekulationer utan konstaterar istället att det var tråkigt att en så pass bra röst har tystnat för evigt.

E.G Daily – Say It Say It

Den här låten är nog den som jag tycker är mest “Madonnalik” i produktionen och jag har haft med den på bloggen tidigare och då konstaterat att den är som Madonna fastän bättre. Måste dessutom erkänna att det är en låt jag aldrig tröttnar på, trots att den egentligen är ganska så “Up-in-your-face” eller hur man ska säga.

Alisha – Baby Talk

Här har vi en tjej som helt klart är inne och pinkar på Madonnas territorium. Hon försöker ju helt ogenerat planka Into The Groove och värst av allt är nog att hon gör det så uttans bra att resultatet blir snäppet bättre än Into The Groove. Tyvärr så fick Alisha inte några större framgångar mer än hos freestylefansen i USA. Freestyle kallas nämligen den här musikstilen som främst kommit att omfamnas av den latinamerikanska befolkningen på USA’s ostkust.

Måste erkänna att jag inte hade hört talas om begreppet Freestyle när det gäller den här musiken förrän på senare år då Wikipedia och YouTube varit de främsta källorna för att sprida dylik kunskap.

Ja, det var tre favoriter när det kommer till några av de bästa låtarna som Madonna aldrig gjorde. Man kan bara fantisera om hur det skulle sett ut om t.ex E.G Daily varit den som blivit superstjärna istället. Finns många kittlande tankeexperiment man kan ägna sig åt när det gäller hur musikhistorien utvecklat sig och bara i det här inlägget så hittar jag en hel drös dylika trådar att spinna vidare på. Men jag ska inte göra det i det här inlägget utan låter er själva komma på egna trådar att roa tankeverksamheten med.

Cansada de passar batom vermelho e ficar parecendo com o Bozo, o livro The One Hundred – A Guide To The Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own foi uma bênção na minha vida. Além de listar o batom vermelho como um item essencial para a vida de qualquer garota, esse livro da Nina Garcia (uma das juízas do Project Runway) dá umas dicas básicas de como aplicar o make sem fazer muita bagunça. Depois de várias tentativas, fiz umas adaptações e achei meu jeito, então é esse que vou falar aqui. 1) Antes de tudo é bom escolher o tipo de vermelho que combina melhor com o seu tom de pele. Eu e a Madonna gostamos muito muito muito do Russian Red, da MAC. Outro bem bom é o Rouge Allure Laque No. 75, da Chanel (esse é um gloss-meio-batom, que é uma maravilha e eu mega recomendo). Se você estiver se sentindo selvagem, o Jungle Red, da NARS também é *incrível*, com um tom meio puxado para o laranja. 2) Depois de escolher a cor, é super importante hidratar. Pode ser um hidratante comum, mas a minha mãe tem um hidratante especial para os lábios da Estée Lauder em formato de caneta que é o bicho (alô, anos 70!). Tem uma versão parecida na Contém 1g que é mais barata e quebra o galho. Antes eu mandava ver o batom sem o hidratante, mas aí minha mãe, que é a doida da hidratação, começou a me falar que se eu não passasse o hidratante antes ia ficar com a boca igual das minhas tias velhas do interior – aquelas bocas cheias de rugas e sulcos, sabe?! Toda vez que penso nisso me dá um desespero e eu prometo que vou usar hidratante pra sempre. 3) Agora que você já está com os lábios lindos, macios e hidratados, chegou a hora de passar o batom! Se preferir, pode usar um lápis de boca para contornar o desenho dos seus lábios e depois brincar de preencher o espaço em branco, que nem naquelas revistinhas de colorir que a gente tinha quando era jovem e feliz. 4) Caso você tenha descartado a ideia do lápis (que nem eu), provavelmente vc está com a boca parecendo a Courtney Love em um dia ruim. Minha dica é pegar um cotonete embebido em água ou demaquilante e passar no contorno da boca. 5) Feito isso, é a hora de fazer a fina, pegar um lencinho e tirar o excesso. 6) O grande truque é, depois de ter tirado o excesso, passar uma segunda camada de batom. Assim, o vermelho da sua boca vai durar muito mais. Cuidado: o bom senso deve sempre prevalecer. Não vá sair de casa que nem uma pomba-gira, PORFAVOR!!!

It’s Wednesday. Halfway there. In TV news, you all were right, if how you voted yesterday was any indication of how Dancing With the Stars would turn out after another double elimination round. Appealing as they were, we had to say buh-bye to Michael Irvin and Mark Dacascos. But far more enlightening for many of us was the performance of the Ballas Hough Band, comprised of dancers Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, Did you see it? Should dancers be allowed to sing? This notion of crossovers is of course where we’re headed with today’s poll, but we’ll get to that in a minute. First up, some big award show news — it seems Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin have both been tapped to host the Oscars…how do you feel about that? We will of course be asking you more pointed questions about your favorite Oscar hosts in the coming weeks. But for now it’s something to consider, and it’s probably a pairing, regardless of its success in terms of ratings, that will make more than a few of us laugh out loud. A lot. In other TV news, many of you were very, very pleased to learn that TNT has rescued Southland, but how do you feel about NBC’s decision not to keep going with Trauma, another brand new medical show barely on its feet before it got the axe? Now let’s get back to today’s business at hand, which is crossover talent. Because the appearance of the Ballas Hough Band made me wonder where genuine talent ends, and where skill — and vanity – begins. Although to be fair, there are a number of actors who have taken to song when we didn’t know they could, with excellent results. Meryl Streep can absolutely sing. Kevin Kline can entertain us with song and dance. Mandy Moore does everything. Hugh Jackman too. Billy Ray Cyrus had a series, and then some. Christopher Walken can totally dance. Patrick Swayze had real pipes. And so on. So now, while we’re on the subject of crossover talent, let’s go the other way and see which singers you think should act more. Jo, nog är det bra hysteriskt det här med svininfluensan och vaccineringen. En god vän var iväg igår och skulle vaccinera sig, efter en halvtimme var vaccinet slut och då hade många inte ens kommit in i lokalen. Värsta kön, man kan ju tro att Madonna är på plats och ska ha en show eller något! Jag undrar jag hur många som far illa av hysterin runt omkring det här? Förmodligen fler än de som blir allvarligt sjuka i influensan i alla fall.

Nej då, jag har inget emot vaccineringen i sig. Särskilt riskgrupperna bör ju absolut vaccinera sig. Det jag vänder mig mot är att alla våra myndigheter och media helt uppslukats av någon hysteri. Som jag känner det är det faktiskt svårt att få fram någon saklig information, och det kan väl ändå inte vara meningen att det ska vara så. Ibland far tanken genom huvudet, hur skulle det bli om något VERKLIGT allvarligt inträffar här? Tror inte jag vill veta det faktiskt trots att jag arbetar inom området själv (kriser alltså).

Nej, några stjärnfall såg jag inte i går kväll när jag var ute med hunden, inte nu på morgonen heller för den delen. Sov någorlunda bra i natt trots fullmånen i alla fall, vaknade tidigt men det gör ju inte så mycket när jag ändå ska upp och jobba.

This week New York welcomes “Performa ‘09“, the third biennial of performance art to hit the city. The event features more than 150 artists over three weeks, and one of whom has me very excited.

I was lucky enough to experience South African artist Candice Breitz’s video installation “Legend” a few years ago, and have been a devoted fan ever since. “Legend” is an homage to Bob Marley using 30 of his fans. She had each of them wear headphones in a simple studio setting, and then individually recorded them singing the entire album. The effect is stunning: the videos are synced so it appears that all 30 participants are singing together a cappella (imagine grooving to your favorite song when you think you are alone):

There’s an even better quality version of the video on Breitz’s website, along with similar homages to John Lennon, Madonna, and Michael Jackson.

Breitz’s usual media are video and photography. For “Performa ‘09″ she is directing her first live performance, “New York, New York.” She’s working with four sets of twins: each set will work with her to develop a single character. Then the twins will be separated into two groups, who will do independent, improvised performances based on their characters. As with much of her work, “New York, New York” is meant to address the complexity of individuality. This work may raise more questions than it answers, but promises to be fun while doing so.

Since the beginning of rock music, the media and general public have been fascinated with rock stars. Their rises to fame (and often pit-falls due to self-destructive habits) have been carefully documented. As such, the Brooklyn Museum’s “Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present” is an excellent photographic narrative of the rock stars we all know and love.

The exhibition, organized by photography historian Gail Buckland, displays over 175 images from 105 photographers. The eclectic mix of work includes album cover art, candid snapshots, publicity portraits, and live performance pictures.

A New York Times Review of the exhibition calls into question “What makes a high-quality rock photograph?” (and compares these photos to fashion photography) As the article states,

…Fashion photography is more immediately visual; you don’t have to know who the model is or who designed the clothes to be interested. With rock photographs it matters who the subject is. Knowing that the bearded young man smiling genially at the camera in a 1972 photograph by Lynn Goldsmith is Bruce Springsteen greatly enhances the experience of an otherwise nondescript picture, for fans of the Boss, anyway.

One way to make rock photographs more interesting would be to analyze them as sociological or anthropological documents. Examining them according to some quasi-scientific system could bring to light meanings and metaphors that we have come to take for granted in the cult of rock. Hero worship, sexual aggression, gender role-playing, youthful rebellion and the triumph of neo-primitivism in a consumerist age of unprecedented scientific, technological and industrial progress: these are topics worth examining…

However, “Who Shot Rock and Roll” is an entertaining show that most pop-culture enthusiasts will enjoy. This seems to be a show for all ages. Baby-boomers will look at the photos of young Madonna and Elvis and be called back to their youths, while todays 20- and 30- somethings will see photos of rock stars from the 80s and 90s and laugh at the styles they all once tried to copy.

Particularly stimulating are photographs of those who died young, as the NY Times article reports,

Of course, some did not get old. Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Tupac Shakur will remain forever young, and pictures of them evoke thoughts of what might have been.

El cuarto episodio de los videos con participación “externa” a la musical viene con el común denominador de que esta vez son actores con carisma y veteranía. No todo iban a ser modelos y actrices, pillines.

Comenzamos con el grupo escocés Texas, que en el año 2001 sacó al mercado su recopilatorio de Greatest Hits en el que se incluían dos canciones inéditas, Inner Smile e In Demand. Para el video de esta última contaron con la presencia de Alan Rickman. El actor londinense deja su impronta en el clip, dando una soberbia réplica a la cantante Sharleen Spiteri, que desde la publicación de su superventas White On Blonde en 1996, saca su vena más femenina y sensual. Y es que el video respira un aire de sensualidad total sin caer en los archisobados “juegos carnales”. Una canción que llegó al número 1 en Inglaterra y en Francia, y que tanto me gusta desde entonces.

Seguimos con los escoceses Texas y en esta ocasión con otro video que rodaron en 2003 y que tiene muchas similitudes con el anterior. Para la canción I’ll see it through también escogieron a otro actor, al marroquí de Casablanca pero francés de adopción Jean Reno. De padres andaluces (Sanlúcar de Barrameda y Jerez de la Frontera), su verdadero nombre es Juan Moreno y Herrera Jiménez, pero lo afrancesó traduciendo su nombre de pila y dejando sólo las dos últimas sílabas de su primer apellido. Parece que a Sharleen le gustó que le abrazara Rickman y repitió la experiencia con el actor de películas como León, Ronin, o Los Visitantes. Inspira ternura y fragilidad a partes iguales ver a la pareja cada vez que se mira o se abraza. La voz de Sharleen una vez más hace de esta canción que sea otra de mis favoritas.

El siguiente turno es para los Guns & Roses, que en 1993, cuando la formación daba sus últimos coletazos, editaron Spaguetti Incident?, un álbum de versiones en el que grabaron Since I don’t have you de los Skyliners. En el video aparece un diablo muy sonriente cuyo papel lo interpreta un camaleónico Gary Oldman que está irreconocible. Esta fue la última aparición de Slash como miembro del grupo. El título de la canción no podía ser más premonitorio con la ruptura de uno de las mejores bandas de los 90.

Acabamos con Madonna, con la polémica reina del pop y recientemente calificada como “retrasada” por su ex Guy Ritchie. En 1986 sacaba su disco True Blue en el que incluía una de sus canciones más conocidas Papa Don’t Preach. El video recrea la misma historia que la letra de la canción: una chica que se queda embarazada y que le dice a su padre que no le sermonee. De padre sermoneador hizo Danny Aiello (nominado al oscar en 1989 por Haz lo que debas) y de novio guaperillas Alex McArthur. Obtuvo el premio al mejor video femenino de la MTV en 1987.

Q: What links a former USSR army officer and the decidely middle class inhabitants of a rural Gloucestershire community?

A: They both have what can politely be described as “unfavourable” views of ‘Gypsies’.

In a 21st Century world where slimy toads such as Nick Griffin and Jean-Marie Le Pen can be rightly lambasted for their hateful and xenophobic political views, why is it that ‘gypsies’ are still reviled across Europe?

Sure there are horror stories about light-fingered pickpockets and travellers who run roughshod over the law. But in communities where they are unequivocally shunned, sometimes they don’t really have many other choices.

When I was in Odessa, in the Ukraine, an ex-USSR army officer said to me that he had once been ‘hypnotised’ by a gypsy lady into buying her wares.

In Moldova, a family I was staying with told me to watch my valuables when they saw a family of Romany board our trolleybus.

In Romania where the Romany are utterly reviled, Madonna was booed when she expressed sadness over the hatred levelled at the gypsy population in Eastern Europe. Can’t say I’m the old bats biggest fan, but she was spot on here.

In Italy, here’s a pretty worrying example of how they’re discriminated against. And here’s one from Belfast too.

And even in my own sleepy home of Newent, Gloucestershire, the (admittedly pretty illegal) actions of some travellers brought howls of opprobrium from normally rational folk.

The examples could go on really. And if anything, within the UK it actually appears to have gotten worse.

So why, in a society where we have rightly renounced all other kinds of hatred based on a persons race, does this lazy hateful stereotyping continue?

When someone makes a comment wholy based on another persons appearance or culture, they are right to be shouted down. Why doesn’t this rule apply to the Romany and other traveller communities of the UK and the rest of the world?

All people deserve equality. And that certainly isn’t what the Romany are getting.

I was at the show last night in Budapest. I was struck by how none of the songs you performed were in their original arrangements.

M: Even my new songs, I have to reinvent them, or after a couple of months, I’ll just get sick of them. When you reinvent them, you have to sit for days with the musical director and your band. Inevitably, you end up sampling someone, and you have to get permission, and pay more money.

People have told me “You could just go out there and play guitar and sing your songs like Paul McCartney?”, but I’d be too bored. Most of the joy of the shows is the magic of creating them – the theater. I’m a perfectionist. I like hard work. I like to sweat.

The FBI, Madonna and members of her depraved, disgraceful Kabbalah cult, such as television writer/producer, Russell Davies (Hollywood’s “Queer as Folk” and the BBC’s “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood”) not only infringed my PREEXISTING copyrights, but violated my privacy as well and that of my family and friends, using it as the basis for select episodes of the BBC programs “Torchwood” and “Doctor Who.”

For more on that, here is an excerpt from the August 31, 2009 lawsuit, Aisha v. The FBI et al, relevant to this article:

24. Madonna then spread her invasive madness to her label affiliate BBC in London where she lived (BBC’s DVDs are distributed by Madonna’s Warner Bros). The BBC is familiar with Aisha’s family, having worked with her dad and aunt. Previously, in 2004, the BBC called Aisha’s dad, renowned musicologist and disc jockey, Vaughn “Bunny” Goodison, in Jamaica over the telephone, for an interview on the passing of his esteemed, lifelong friend and music legend, 72-year-old, Clement Dodd. On another occasion, the BBC telephoned Aisha’s dad for comment on the passing of famous charity worker, 87-year-old, Sister Mary Ignatius Davies, who was also a good friend of the family. These interviews were carried on BBC radio and on their websites. Aisha’s aunt, Jamaica’s award winning, highly rated, poet laureate, Lorna Goodison, had also done pleasant radio and print interviews with the BBC. Therefore, the family had maintained a good relationship with the BBC, but Madonna, driven by ill-will and hatred, resenting the famous arts family, due to Aisha’s very valuable, groundbreaking Copyrighted Catalog she covets and Aisha’s refusal to respond to her correspondences, viciously sponsored a Kabbalah styled case of gross invasion of privacy and copyright infringement, through BBC employees and Kabbalah members, Russell Davies and Billie Piper (Madonna’s protégé), aimed at vindictively targeting and maligning the award winning family. The family at no time did anything to Madonna, Davies or Piper, not knowing any of them, yet acting in concert with Madonna, they began to place items from Aisha’s preexisting Copyrighted Catalog and astonishingly her personal life as well, in his BBC scripts.

Davies infringed Aisha’s copyrights for select episodes of the BBC shows “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood” and additionally, included Aisha’s personal, identifying information unique to her, in his scripts. These items were obtained through hacking by the staff of Madonna.com. Davies, who has visited Aisha’s official websites, before and after the misconduct transpired, as attested by Traffic Facts site statistics software, has followed Madonna’s lead and taken broadcasting to an unprecedented low in Britain for the “Children of Earth” five part series on the “Torchwood” program he writes for. The “Children of Earth” broadcast not only includes items from preexisting, protected items from Aisha’s computers, using it for the main storyline of the 5 part miniseries, it also includes Aisha’s mother’s name “MILLIE” as a character, a variation of AISHA’s name in the script as a character named “MISHA”, a look-alike character that is the spitting image of Aisha’s sister, casting the character as a girl who is maliciously exploited and thrown in prison, the name CLEMENT mcDOnalD, a variation of the name CLEMENT DODD, appears in the script as an elderly character (CLEMENT DODD is Aisha’s aforementioned godmother’s husband, who invented reggae music and signed Bob Marley to his first record deal). There is also a character named MR. DEKKER, which is the real name of one of CLEMENT DODD’s legendary, award winning, international reggae recording colleagues and Aisha’s dad’s late friend, MR. DESMOND DEKKER. The CLEMENT and DEKKER names were cast as psychotic, despised, crazy characters running from aliens, which is disrespectful to the memory of the two, real, beloved, legendary Jamaican national heroes in the music field, which the names were distastefully taken from, in a racist manner by Russell Davies and Madonna’s Kabbalah. Other invasive items that infringe Aisha’s preexisting copyrights were included in select episodes of Russell Davies’ show “Doctor Who.” …

Other members of Madonna’s Kabbalah such as Sacha Baron Cohen, have been outed using real people for characters in TV shows and movies, such as “Ali G” being based on BBC radio disc jockey Tim Westwood and 2009’s Austrian character “Bruno” being illegally based on Austrian TV personality Alfons Haider. In 2009, Madonna’s partner and Kabbalah member, Jerry Bruckheimer was also sued for perversely basing a defamatory episode of “CSI” on a real live couple that owns a Los Angeles real estate firm, Scott and Melinda Tamkin, with the show using their real names and lives for the broadcast without permission, but defaming them as reckless people participating in sexual bondage, pornography, drunkenness and murder, in similar conduct to what Aisha had formally accused Bruckheimer of in her 2005 lawsuit against Madonna.

Since the filing of the lawsuit several weeks ago, I have discovered my teenage godbrother’s privacy and that of his mother, who live in South Florida in America, were violated during the case, as he, his mother and I, exchange emails very often and speak on the phone regularly, which was illegally wiretapped Anthony Pellicano style (Madonna’s private investigator, whom I gave the FBI detailed information about in 2005 and he was later arrested and convicted on wiretapping charges – see lawsuit for more information).

During one of the many hacks into my computer, which were traced back to Digilink, who is the web hosting company for Madonna’s official website Madonna.com, not only was my very valuable preexisting Copyrighted Catalog copied and then infringed by Madonna and her cohorts in Hollywood, my emails, both business and personal, were illegally copied, as mentioned in the lawsuit.

As stated in the lawsuit and mentioned above in the excerpt, Madonna’s Kabbalah member, homosexual Russell Davies (and his “Doctor Who” actress, Madonna protégé and Kabbalah cult member, Billie Piper) infringed preexisting copyrights belonging to me, for select episodes of “Torchwood” and “Doctor Who” and additionally included items in the script, such as the names of my family members and friends in the “Children Of Earth” 5-part miniseries on “Torchwood.”

Skins

Recently, I saw a bio page for the BBC/E4 program “Skins.” The homosexual father and son team of Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain, who are the writers and creators of the extremely dysfunctional and distasteful teen show “Skins” was mentioned in conjunction with Madonna’s Kabbalah member Russell Davies. The article stated Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain used to work for Russell Davies. They are also Davies’ BBC co-workers.

Now, imagine my horror and repulsion, when I scrolled down the character list for the show “Skins” and see my godbrother’s name “JJ Jones” listed as a character (his first name is John, but his family and friends call him “JJ”).

Imagine my horror again, when I read about the character and realize said character not only has my godbrother’s name, mimicking the sick conduct Madonna/Davies did to my family, but also infringes his image and likeness as well. This infringing character was created when my godbrother was 17-years-old. He is now 19.

Things the character on “Skins” has in common with my godbrother “JJ Jones”:

1. The name “JJ Jones”

2. 17-years of age

3. Wears braces

4. Grew his hair out a bit (his mom kept commenting on it, as she wanted him to cut it)

5. Lives with his mom a single parent

6. A very smart student

7. Hangs out often with his two best friends

8. Has a penchant for drinking Tropicana (an American, Florida brand of fruit juice that amazingly appears in a British show)

How does the BBC explain, how people connected to Madonna via Kabbalah, not only wound up in criminal possession of an illegally made copy of my Copyrighted Catalog, infringing items from it via using them without permission, but said characters in the infringing programs, now mysteriously have my mother’s name MILLIE, a variation of my name AISHA (”MISHA“), a look alike character that looks a great deal like my sister, the name my of my godmother’s husband who invented reggae music CLEMENT DODD (turned into the variant name “CLEMENT mcDOnalD“) and his colleague, the late reggae legend, DESMOND DEKKER’s name used as “MR. DEKKER” in the programming (Note: My dad interviewed Desmond Dekker’s family on his radio show, listened to by millions around the world, shortly before Russell Davies did this invasive madness) and now my godbrother’s name, image and likeness, appears along with the other infringements, as characters penned by these same writers, Russell Davies, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain.

Let’s not forget, prior to this, the BBC called my dad, a renowned musicologist, twice in Jamaica for interviews on famous public figures that are friends of the family. I kept wondering how they got his number. They also interviewed my aunt, an award winning author, Lorna Goodison, prior to all this as well.

Therefore, the BBC does know my family. Not to mention, the BBC has come up in my website stats numerous times, before and after these incidents regarding Russell Davies, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain transpired.

It’s bad enough for Madonna and co. to violate my privacy, but while their invasiveness was going on, she and her comrades at the BBC, invaded the privacy of my sister and godbrother, who were minors at the time this unlawful activity began. That is absolutely criminal.

I am also of the belief, they found out what my sister looks like and based the aforementioned “Torchwood” character on her (”Lois” from Torchwood’s “Children of Earth), via photos I had taken of her at the airport, that I emailed to her in Jamaica, after I extracted them from the card of my digital camera.

I asked my mom and another relative to look at the picture and tell me what they think and they said she does look like her (except, my sister usually has her hair straight – however, in the photos that I took of her at the airport and emailed to her, she had the front of her hair braided):

Violating the privacy of minors is a very serious crime. Turning two minors, that are private citizens, into characters on TV, at the request of a sick, devilish pop star, Madonna, invading innocent people’s privacy and harassing others, as she is psychopathic and obsessed out of her non-singing mind, is disgusting and nasty.

Russell Davies, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain, have also added other very defamatory and sick items to the characters lives, based on my sister and godbrother, that are more than enough grounds for criminal charges and a lawsuit.

Once again, Madonna and co. have gone too far. The worst part in all this is, we are innocent people that have nothing to do with Madonna or her lunatic Kabbalah cult members like Davies.

And I promise you, all that are involved in committing this foul, nasty misconduct on those shows, that criminally invaded the privacy of minors, will see the inside of a prison cell before this is all over. You have my word on it.

Do, pray tell, what did my young sister and godbrother do to you? They are two good, decent, hardworking kids that make great grades in school and are trying to live their lives.

How did they deserve for a group of vile, despicable, perverted lunatics to invade their privacy and beam their lives, image, likeness and in my godbrother’s case, his actual name, around the world (his mom’s distinct last name that is different from his, was also used for a Russell Davies’ TV character on “Torchwood”).

Do stand up like men, albeit cowardly homosexual men, obsessed with underage boys and girls – and tell the world what my young sister and godbrother, who do not even know you at all, nor do I, did to you that they deserve this criminal nastiness and invasiveness you’ve done in conjunction with your fellow Kabbalah cult member Madonna. You must be so proud of yourselves spying on and picking on underage youths, you perverts.

Really, what if I took the low road, as Madonna has done once again and cast a character in one of my scripts with her daughter’s name, writing that the 12-year-old girl is to be dressed like an underage prostitute, trying to be sexy for the camera. Oh wait, Madonna has done that to her daughter already for her latest video, trying to shock people for attention.

Regarding, Russell Davies, Bryan Elsley and Jamie Brittain, what if I pen a script, casting your respective parents’ names, image and likeness, as characters that molest kids and pee on them in the woods, as singer Elton John was accused of doing, by the Sun Newspaper UK. How would you feel about that.

I can get their names off Wikipedia if you’d like (and knowing Wikipedia, there is a 99% probability the names would be wrong, anyway).

But I wouldn’t do something like that. Because at the end of the day, one has to ask one’s self, what kind of sick people do things like that, you know, as you have done to my innocent family and I, who’ve done you no harm.

Once again, if the shiftless, useless, corrupt FBI had done their jobs from 2005, when they first received the case, those depraved animals could not have taken things to such sick levels, causing irreparable damage to innocent people, including minors, as mentioned above.

And the FBI wonders why I have nothing positive to write about them. Take a good look at that mess, as two young people have now been harmed, because you corruptly decided to let a foul, vile, dirty old pop star that audiences don’t even care about anymore, run loose with this madness, committing crime after crime, against innocent people, so she and Hollywood could criminally rip me off, as my Copyrighted Catalog is very valuable.

Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised that the FBI doesn’t care about kids, as it was widely reported, the FBI told the parents of missing children to buzz off.

You call that law enforcement. You are such unmitigated failures at what you do. Hands down, the worst law enforcement agency ever.

2 Wochenenden mit Viel Action !!!

BB Gun / Paintball und Siam Park

Viel Action mit ein wenig Schwund……

… wie heist es doch so schön…. Ungeschicktes Fleisch muss ab….

Das letzte Wochenende im September waren wir Paintball schießen. Diese Lust bestand schon in Deutschland, aber nein, in Thailand mit Temperaturen über 33 Grad haben wir es dann gespielt

Mit Langarm Overall, Woll-Gesichtsmaske/Mütze, Schutzweste und Helm (ich wiederhole, bei Temperaturen über 33 Grad) sind wir dann ins Gelände. Da wir alle das noch nie gespielt hatten, fingen wir im “Kinder Gehege” an. Da standen riesige weiße Luftkissen / Gebilde wo sich jeder hinter versteckte und dann fleißig versuchte den Gegner abzuschießen. Bei der Einweisung, wie man sich zu verhalten hatte, lief uns schon die Suppe den Beinen runter und es kam uns vor wie Stunden…. Umso lustiger war es dann, als es losging, und sich erst mal keiner wirklich getraut hatte, sich von seinem Schutzwall fortzubewegen.

2 Runden im “Kinder Gehege” und dann ging es ab ins große freie Gehege. Das hat richtig Laune gemacht. Sich hinter Baume und Hecken zu verstecken, über den Boden zu robben, um sich an die Gegner anzuschleichen, war echt geil, auch wenn man vor lauter Schweiß durchnässt war

Kathy hat sich super geschlagen. Im Ganzen waren wir 5 Männer und 2 Frauen. Zum Schluss waren nur noch Kathy und Kwesi im Rennen, und da Kathy keine Munition mehr hatte, hatte Kwesi das ganze gewonnen. Natürlich hat man hier Blessuren davon getragen. Kathy hatte 2 ganz heftige Einschläge an Schulter und Oberarm abbekommen, welche sich in den darauf folgenden Tagen ziemlich blau/lila und hinterher grün/gelb färbten

Thorsten hatte lediglich ne Beule am Kopf davon getragen, was aber nicht wirklich schlimm war. Denn, wir wollen das auf jeden Fall noch einmal machen aber eher im Dezember oder Januar, wenn die Temperaturen knapp unter 30 Grad liegen

Erstes Wochenende im Oktober waren wir im Siam Park. Ein Park aufgebaut wie Freizeitpark Rust oder Phantasialand, nur grösser mit Safari Park und Wasserpark.

Dieser Tag war für den Wasserpark geplant, wo wir gegen halb elf morgens bis abends kurz vor sechs, waren. Mit riesigem Wellenbad und Monsterrutschen genossen wir den Tag. In wie so üblich musste Kathy mal wieder verarztet werden. Beim Rutschen hat sie sich den Nagel samt Nagelbett (Fleisch) aufgerissen. Und die Frauen die auch künstliche Nägel haben, wissen wie schmerzvoll das Ganze ist. Also ab mit Ihr in den FIRST AID (Erste Hilfe) und behandeln lassen. Der Nagel wurde komplett runter geschnitten, dann mit Jod und Pflaster verarztet, und für Kathy war Schluss mit Rutschen. Der Tag war aber trotzdem sehr schön, und neue (rötliche) Farbe haben wir auch getankt

Beim Eintrittspreis zum Wasserpark hatte man noch eine Freizeitpark Attraktion seiner Wahl frei. Also sind wir (ohne Thorsten) noch auf die Looping Bahn (Boomerang) gegangen. Oh wow…. Kathy war seit bestimmt 10 Jahren nicht mehr auf einer Achterbahn, und kam daher mit etwas zittrigen Knieen wieder von der Bahn

Was die nächsten Wochenenden so passiert, wissen wir noch nicht, aber wir haben noch so einiges vor….

nächstes Wochenende kommt bald….Ende Oktober gehts nach Koh Samui.

She looked fantastic. The song was a dense slice of clubland manna. And why not? The penny dropped. Why give up the ghost just because of a few hot flushes and grey hairs? Your body’s tight. You’ve built a successful career. You’re a doting mother – see the alternative take where Lourdes appears on screen with her mother dressed as bride a la Like a Virgin. Cute.

OSF Tribute to a True Musical Maverick: Meshell Ndegeocello

It’s Tribute Week here at Old School Friday! And here is mine:

It was a hot summer day, Washington D.C., at some outdoor urban fair celebrating some thing or another and featuring overpriced bottled water and free concerts. It was a homecoming of sorts for Meshelle Ndegeocello, a relatively new artist on the scene. Though she was an Army brat born in Germany—she had spent some childhood and college years not far from where she was now jamming on stage. I was impressed with how tight her band was, how they changed chords at her merest nod of instruction and took it to the bridge one more time with the merest thump-signal of her bass. Somewhere in this enjoyment of the concert, the woman standing next to me said “Sweet Jesus, it’s like I wandered into a meeting of the dyke mafia.”

I experienced a moment of confusion. Perhaps she had assumed I was Family and was sharing a wry in-joke observation with me. In which case I would be flattered. But perhaps she had assumed I was a fellow homophobe and was sharing a hateful condemnation with me. In which case I would be outraged.

Probably for the sake of this blog post all these years later I should make up a story of a witty response on my part and a funny resolution. But as happens in most such ambiguous encounters, I said nothing. The moment hung there and then dissipated, leaving the sounds of Meshell and her kick-ass band going through another number for the crowd.

But I do recall then noticing for the first time that the audience was filled with almost all women. Some seamed just to be jamming and enjoying the music. Many, though, seemed to be silently dissecting Meshell and her lyrics: Here she is talking about “if that’s your boyfriend he wasn’t last night…wassup with that? Is that Black woman up front her partner? How well does she know Madonna? I thought her stuff would sound more like John Mellencamp. How the hell do you pronounce her name, anyway? So, is she a rapper or what?

OK. So I know I was probably imagining what these women were thinking. And I understand that most people—regardless of mafia membership—probably had to work a little at fitting Meshell into a neat box. She was funk and hip hop and spoken word and R&B and jazz and rock. She was an openly bisexual woman singing songs about loving men and loving women. She played an instrument that was a tall as she was. What the hell was she?

A maverick, that’s what.

How fitting, then, that she was recording on Madonna’s then-new label, Maverick Records.

Since that first album, she has continued to evolve. Themes of the the often-time painful exploration of spirituality and sexual and racial identity have taken more space on her albums. Themes of sexual and romantic longing infuse her lyrics in ways that are honest and blunt and familiar to anyone who has ever loved and not-gotten or loved and lost. She has explored jazz instrumentals that—in an ideal world—would have critics talking of her ushering in a “neo-fusion” movement as they have talked of her jump starting “neo-soul.” She has collaborated with some of the most talented artists in the music world.

She is a staple on tribute albums and movie soundtracks, with her ability to so expertly study and reinterpret the music of her predecessors and to so beautifully paint music-mood pictures.

Despite being—still—highly unpackageable in a heavily packaged musical world, she has managed to produce a steady output of music that is greedily gobbled up by a strong, if somewhat small, fan base.

And I hear that she will be releasing a new album!

I hope that this means she will also be embarking on a tour—a major one that will pass through my small corner of the universe. The Meshell Ndegeocello experience is not complete without seeing her in concert. I saw her one more time after the free D.C. concert—this time indoors, in Montreux, Switzerland at the famous jazz festival. Again, she was absolutely amazing. Again, her band was tight. Again, she took us through all sorts of genres and moods and grooves. She, obviously, takes performing seriously, as she had been no less professional and serious about her performance at her early free D.C. concert than on this international stage.

I can only hope—and wait. And in the meantime offer up this Old School Friday Tribute to a True Musical Maverick, Meshell Ndegeocello. As always, have a great OSF and a wonderful weekend. Enjoy!

Gli italiani sono molto graditi a Medjugorje perchè fanno fare affari d’oro ai bosniaci e croati. Celebre dal 1981 per le regolari apparizioni della Vergine Maria a sei persone del posto, la piccola località della Bosnia-Erzegovina è diventata un enclave dell’Euro. Provate a tirar fuori dal portafoglio la valuta locale e farete indispettire gli esercenti. La furbata è stata studiata: i prezzi sono stati adeguati a quelli nostri e vecchie catapecchie si sono trasformate in “pansion” per accogliere pellegrini e curiosi che vanno lì sperando di vedere il prodigio. E tra i cattolici c’è chi preferisce Medjugorje perchè qui “le manifestazioni” riguardano il nostro tempo, come se poi Fatima o Lourdes fossero posti da libri di storia! Non mi pare che quando ci sia di mezzo “la fede” sia regolare fare differenza tra i luoghi. Opportunismo spirituale o cosa? Il business è ovunque, persino all’ufficio postale dove è disponibile il francobollo con l’immagine della Madonna. Per fortuna, incamminandosi sulla collina delle apparizioni tra pietre spigolose e sassi taglienti, si ferma la volgarità che mortifica la fede e il culto. “Arrivi fino in cima. Ne vale la pena. Non si faccia ostacolare da questo sole cocente”, mi ammonisce una signora croata che spiffera qualche parola d’italiano. In cima a quella collina è tutto diverso, ma non c’è il prodigio visionario a cui tutti vorremmo assistere. C’è una pace e una tranquillità che mettono quiete nel nostro spirito. E così che il viaggio a Medjugorje trova la sua motivazione affinchè quella “Bianca Signora” non diventi folclore e il sacrosanto rispetto per la fede altrui si riduca ad altarini illuminati.

Долгожданный час начала концерта Мадонны в Москве пришел в 21.00 и закончился около 24.00. Певица Мадонна была просто великолепна, стройная, спортивная и в разнообразных нарядах. Музыка не звучала вместе с ее голосом просто приятно для слуха. И время от времени музыка заглушалась отлично поставленными голосами доблестной охраны, которая ходила по рядам и грозным голосом сообщала, что после окончания концерта каждый сектор будет закрыт и открыт только после того, как вся масса потенциальных «танцоров» в специальном партере покинет Лужники. В общем, в определенный момент, оказавшись под его очарованием и убедительным тоном, мы все же приняли решение покинуть стадион раньше, что дало нам возможность, в отличие от тех, кто остался, не сидеть в полной тишине 2 часа после окончания концерта, ожидая официального разрешения покинуть стадион. Подводя итоги всего этого вечера, хочется сказать, что все здесь было просто великолепно, а главное бесплатно. А больше всего нам пришлось по нраву, когда до начала концерта сектора пытались делать волну, стараясь хоть немного согреться. Было очень задорно. Певицу Мадонну выносят висящей на кресте, а она поет, это оригинальный номер сопровождается установкой про голодающих детей африканского континента, и высвечиваются интернет порталы тех компаний, которые занимаются этой серьезной темой.

Сегодня певица не дремлет и новая песня Madonna – Celebration – это лишь подтвержение, что 51 летняя певица полна сил и готова продолжать радовать многочисленных поклонников все новыми и новыми хитами.

Your Body Image - Loving the Woman Staring Back

Wow, sitting at Second Cup, writing today’s blog entry before going to serve pizza lunch at my son’s school. I have to say, I’m enjoying this new venture. I simply love everything women related, all the issues, and this has become an incredible medium for me to connect with all of you.

Because many of you have written in about body image, diet and other, I am dedicating today’s blog to you ladies. Summer is practically over, BBQ season is just about done, the flowing booze is no longer flowing. It’s time to head back to the gym and get remotivated. As my woman Oprah says, “It’s time to put yourselves back on your to-do list.”

I often hear, “I look like sh*t… I feel like sh*t… I need to lose 10 pounds… I’m too short… My thighs are too big… My skin looks old… I”m sagging…” and the list goes on and on. We are very hard on ourselves. Who can blame us? All you have to do is open any magazine… you see what you’re “supposed” to look like. An airbrushed, anorexic, body focused, diet and exercise obsessed individual. Sweethearts, you’re never gonna win that battle. Kelly Ripa, Madonna, and Gwyneth’s bodies are their careers. They have unlimited budgets to spend on custom designed organic meals brought to them three times a day. A trainer 7 days a week. A masseuse. An accupuncturist. A yoga guru. A spiritual adviser. A beautician on call 24/7. And the list goes go on and on.

Now, back to reality. If you’re like the rest of the world who just struggles to make it through the day, Stella, you gotta get your groove back! And while most women who stare in the mirror don’t love what they see staring back, it’s time to work with what you got. It’s time to embrace what god gave you and work it to your advantage. I swear, it ain’t all physical. Please let that soak in. Attractiveness is so way beyond how thin or fit you are, and how great your skin looks. It’s time to change your body image. I’m gonna try and help you below.

Firstly, let me give you a few disturbing facts. Take away what you will from them.

The average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 140 pounds. The average American model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds.
One out of every four college aged woman is suffering from an eating disorder.
At age 13, 53% of all American girls are “unhappy with their bodies.” This grows to an enormous 78% by the time the girls turn 17.

Now, starting today, you’re gonna try one or a few of these suggestions below. You’re gonna start loving the body you were given and make it work for you. Your going to start improving your own body image.

Try and not weigh yourself. Go by how you feel. If you are at the gym exercising regularly and eating well, throw the scale away. You don’t need it if you’re doing everything else correctly. It just leads to obsessions!
Surround yourself with realistic images of women, like the one at the top. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and stop perusing through Bazaar and Vogue in the grocery line.
Look for clothes that compliment your OWN body shape and size… NOT THE ONE YOU WANT TO HAVE. Wearing clothes that fit you properly and look good on YOU will help you feel better. However, please note, external beauty isn’t only about your size. It’s about how you carry yourself, your confidence, your aura. Stop those negative thoughts.
Exercise. Do something 3-6 times a week that makes you sweat. The endorphins do great things for your brain. They give you feelings of euphoria. It will in turn have beneficial results on your body. It’s a whole positive cycle.
You’re gonna have to be with yourself for a very long time. Treat yourself kindly. Wake up gently. Grab a cup of warm tea. Shower with care. Get ready slowly if you can. Take a hot bath at night with lavender oils. It’s not realistic every day. But pampering yourself makes you feel better. And when you feel better in your brain, it shows everywhere.

And realize. All we can do is our best in life. Try and cut yourself some slack. Learning to love yourself inside and out is a process. Start today. Go easy on yourselves. Be kind to the woman staring back in the mirror. Love her.

El sábado por la mañana me hice a mí mismo un recorrido turístico por los lugares de Guadalajara que, para bien o para mal, me han convertido en lo que soy. Lo que sea que soy, que seguro que es algo. Estuve en el cole en el que pasé diez años, apostado frente a las rejas por donde hace mucho ví atravesar a un microscópico y revoltoso gitano, aprendiz de Copperfield, y torcí por la calle de los putis, que bajábamos corriendo tras llamar a la puerta. Me dí de bruces con el callejón donde se pegaron Ángel y Sergio, los representantes testosterónicos del A y el B. Se hicieron sangre y todo.

El campo en el que jugamos el primer partido de la historia de mi equipo es ahora un hermoso y deshabitado bloque de viviendas, cuajado de carteles de “se vende“. Tiene tantos que parece que alguien tendrá que ir a recolectarlos, o se caerá el edificio. Antes era un solar, picado por algunas matas rebeldes, limitado por dos porterías, y adornado por un buen número de boñigas de oveja. Esperaba que construyeran un parque, un polideportivo o algo así, pero mira. Me salta el pilotito de “metáfora”, pero piso el turbo porque sé que se desactiva. Mirar hacia otro lado es una de mis especialidades.

El parque donde dí el primer beso -podría ir al espacio público donde follé por primera vez, pero me parecía algo ruín y miserable incluírlo en tan glorioso tour, así que se cayó del programa- está como estaba. Arizónicas aferradas a la tierra, marcando la disposición rara de los senderos, como para que cientos de parejas se den el primer beso sin que ninguna moleste a la otra. Cuando digo que dí el primer beso, es que lo dí, ella recibió ese noble arte que tanto había ensayado con la almohada. Recuerdo que me empalmé, y eso sí que no lo esperaba, así que me separé un poquito de la chica, para no parecer un vicioso.

La puerta de las dos radios me traen escalofríos de madrugones, desconfianzas, y toneladas de café. El trayecto entre ellas cuenta la historia de una estrella que brilla en degradé, pero que puede pasear con la cabeza alta, y eso no se compra con prestigio -”más vale ser estrella en provincias que uno más en la capital“, me dijo un amigo-, pero nadie ha dicho que no se compre con dinero. Esperaba que, a mi edad, sería ya el nuevo Buenafuente, y mira. Todavía no podría ir a una de esas fiestas de aniversario de promoción, porque me verían como un fracasado. Estoy esperando salir en portada del EP3 para no tener que dar explicaciones.

El garito en el que pinchaba está cerrado. A cal y canto es poco: han tapiado la puerta. Miré el pequeño escalón, que predecía el gran póster que anunciaba que djRob Gordon pinchaba aquella noche una de sus sesiones “vendí la silla de ruedas de mamá”, donde el soul y el pop marcaron el tiempo de las últimas noches largas alcarreñas, antes de que los políticos decidieran que, a las tres de la mañana, o eres tunero, o te vas a tu casa. Esperaba que lo cogiera otro dueño, y que pusiera Rafaella Carrá, y Madonna, y esas mierdas para oficinistas que se disfrazan de divertidos los sábados, pero mira.

Mañana cumplo veintiocho años, y pensaba que con veintiocho no sería viejo, pero mira.

Dress You Up (en español Vestirte) es el quinto y último sencillo del álbum Like a Virgin de la cantante pop estadounidense Madonna, publicado el 24 de julio de 1985. Está escrita por Peggy Stanziale y Andrea LaRusso y producida por Nile Rodgers.

“Dress You Up” es el sencillo que cerró uno de los discos más vendidos de Madonna: Like a Virgin. Publicado en julio de 1985, logró alcanzar la quinta posición en el Billboard Hot 100, puesto significativo teniendo en cuenta que la canción no contó con un video oficial y que fue último sencillo.

“Dress You Up” es una canción con un pesado ritmo de baile y con una pequeña ruptura instrumental de guitarra eléctrica. Madonna hace una metáfora entre el sexo y la moda, ya que en su mismo nombre (Vestirte), Madonna obviamente desea vestir a su atractivo chico para poder tocar su cuerpo. Aunque a simple vista la canción no contiene lírica explícita y tampoco pasa más que decir versos como “siente el sedoso roce de mis caricias”, Tipper Gore pensó que era demasiado lo que oía. La señora Gore, esposa del famoso vicepresidente demócrata de Estados Unidos, creó a comienzos de 1980 la “Parents Music Resource Center” para proteger a los menores de los excesos que en aquellos tiempos cometían los medios de comunicación en cuanto a sexo, drogas y violencia. En 1985 esta asociación elaboró una lista con canciones que sobrepasaban estos excesos, y entre ellas estaba “Dress You Up”. Si bien el sencillo no fue afectado por esto, cabe decir que en su carrera Madonna ha tenido varias etiquetas de Parental Advisory en las carátulas de sus sencillos.

En los años 90, “Dress You Up” fue utilizada para promocionar la marca de ropa GAP, utilizando la canción como eslogan.

Un’altra star che ha partecipato alla New York Fashion Week è Lady Gaga, che però non ha lasciato a casa i suoi look eccentrici e completamente out. Ma cosa ha attirato di più l’attenzione dei fotografi? La vicinanza tra Lady Gaga e la regina del pop, Madonna, nel privè di Marc Jacobs. Entrambe in total look Marc Jacobs ed entrambe out: Lady Gaga per la maschera borchiata e i capelli biondo-fuxia arruffati, fermati con un cappello, mentre Madonna indossava un vestito trasparente, con stivali in pelle fino a mezza coscia e chiodo. Madonna aveva proprio parlato della nuova promessa del pop in un’intervista, ammettendo di ammirarla e, a quanto pare, anche sul look sono d’accordo.

Ma Lady Gaga è stata anche protagonista del party di Marc Jacobs e V Magazine, con una mise ancora più shock. La cantante è salita sul palco con una tutina di pizzo rosso, che lasciava ben poco all’immaginazione, anche a causa del mini tanga indossato e dall’assenza del reggiseno. Altro dettaglio out, l’acconciatura: una parte di capelli stile Marilyn Monroe e un’altra, sul retro, in stile aureola da santino. Sinceramente, non mi escono altre parole per descriverla, ma penso che le foto parlino da sè.

So, um, yeah. I’ve been pretty sick lately. What started out as a little bit of a fever on Sunday morning turned into a torrential attack of nausea, stomach pains, fever, a headache, and an unmentionable or two. I then spent the next two days more or less curled up in a ball and miserable.

The worst part was the nausea.

Nausea sucks. Being sick sucks.

You become incapacitated and powerless. It’s amazing how important it is to have good health. It underlies and facilitates anything that you do in your life.

At some point, I decided to take in some Pepto Bismol and chicken soup, and somehow, I started to feel better. The stomach pains and nausea started to wane, and slowly enough, my appetite returned. I’m still taking some medicine, but for the most part, I am now recovered.

Thank goodness.

Now, on to brighter and happier things . . .

This weekend, I will be in Charlotte, NC to perform on stage at Manifest Discs, and so, I’ll be spending the latter half of this week getting ready for that. This show will be my last out-of-town show for 2009, and I want to make it really special. It will have a mix of songs from “Seahorses” and some newer pieces I’ve been working on. Can’t wait to head out there to do this.

My recent bout with miserable sickness has heightened my awareness for proper nutrition and all-around wellness. I generally am very good about getting regular exercise, but I’ve decided to incorporate more foods that are natural and full of nutrients in my diet. I’m going to try to eat more fruits and veggies every day. I also really love eating soups (like chicken soup which is drenched with all kinds of nutrients for some reason), and so, more of those for sure. Besides, soups taste so much better in colder weather.

I took a break from knitting over the last couple of weeks to devour some new books on my reading list, but now, it is time to knit again. I am almost done with another mitered square. Finally, I will begin work on a new scarf that has a cool basket weave pattern. Can’t wait to get this one going.

I did manage to record last Sunday’s VMA’s on DVR, and I watched it all the other night. The highlights for me were Madonna’s and Janet Jackson’s tributes to Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga’s theatrical performance (that little piano bit she did was REALLY cool), and Muse’s first US tv performance. Muse is one of the best bands in the world right now, and it’s a shame that the US market is only now getting a real taste of what they do.
