Tuesday links

  • Is Madonna going frummy?  Tablet describes her VMA outfit as looking like “the edgiest rebbetzin at the sisterhood meeting.”
  • Another post from Tablet about Oran Etkin, a musician whose work is described as a cross between Louis Armstrong, Malian griots and the shtetl.
  • Pitchfork reports that the Black Keys are releasing a hip hop-influenced record in November called Blakroc (and throws in a sneak preview track).  I’m excited!!
  • Brazilian evangelical churches are using reggae and boxing to draw converts.  I’ll explore this more in a few months, when I have some substantial fieldwork in Pentecostal churches behind me (which reminds me, I owe y’all a post about my research).
